Thanks George :) the nest is only a couple of metres from a busy path, i was surprised they would build it there.

Hi Cy, well you know how people really don't travel far off the beaten path, so it felt safe where it was. I've seen birds nesting near busy roads because the cars don't bother them and people don't usually walk down those busy roads.

Just watched a live TV nature show we have over here, they showed video of a swallows nest on a canal gate, the gate opens several times a day, they also mentioned a bird that built its nest on a boat that gives rides on a lake, apparently the bird feeds the chicks throughout the day no matter where on the lake the boat is, amazing !

I watched David Attenborough's 'Life of Birds' a few months ago and there was a disturbing segment about these little birds. They may hatch 7-9 chicks and, at first, they seem perfect parents but after a while, they seem to get fed up with the little ones constantly begging for food. They punish the chicks for this by pecking them on their heads and eventually, concentrate their actions on a single chick. Ultimately, the chick learns from the constant pecking and ceases to beg and so starves to death. This punishment is meted out to most of the chicks until only about 2 or 3 survive. If it's a good year and there's plenty of food around, they may allow all their chicks to live but generally that doesn't happen. I know it's nature but it was disturbing, nonetheless :(

I have read the same, odd behaviour unless it teaches all of the chicks not to be greedy.

Natural selection, I suppose, wicked though it seems to us. I went out with my camera this afternoon and came across a couple of coots and their young - just the two chicks. Made me wonder if there had been more at one point.

Amazing colours on the chicks, hard to believe they end up looking like the parents.
